The Indigenous Employment Pathways Program aims to provide employment opportunities for 15 Aboriginal Australians living in, or with connections to the Upper Hunter area of New South Wales.

Indigenous Employment pathways ProgramThis Glencore initiative is in partnership with JobTrail, the Indigenous services division of the WorkPac Group, to start the program on 22 March 2021.

Here’s a little more information about the program.

It builds on the Indigenous Employment Pathways Program conducted in Queensland over 2019 and 2020. The Queensland program resulted in employment opportunities for participants at the end of the 26 weeks.

Program structure
The program is broken into two phases:

  • Phase 1 – provides participants with back-to-work skills, mine site compliance safety training and a range of life skills
  • Phase 2 – includes training and paid work experience that aims to get participants job-ready.
  • At the completion of the 26-week program, participants will have fulfilled the requirements to obtain a Certificate II in Surface Extraction.

“The Pathways Program has many parts to it,” says Tim Walls, manager for approvals and cultural heritage for Glencore Coal in New South Wales.

“It provides a training and work experience program, but just as importantly, it is a way for Indigeneous people to connect back to country and shape their own future.

“From our point of view, we saw an opportunity to engage with local communities in the areas where we operate in order to provide potential opportunities for employment in both our business and with other local employers.”
